Alamy's Soft or Lacking Definition

Whatever you might think about Alamy QC failing images for "soft or lacking definition", as explained here, so far those of us who frequent the forum have yet to see a picture that the photographer can show at 100% to be free of some kind of flaw. Since I seem to be capable of creating pictures that are soft and lacking definition on demand I thought I would put up some more examples for those who are still in denial about it.

Last week I had just such a moment. I'd had no failures for a week or so and was thinking all was fine and then three times in a row I got a soft and lacking definition failure. It turns out that the two photos responsible for the failure are soft, as follows (shown as 100% crops of the original 48+Mb files):

This one is most likely mis-focussed @ 1/350s f10 31mm handheld

This one is most likely the subject moving and/or mis-focussed and to cap it all, there is clear CA at the edges of the bird @ 1/800s f8 400mm VR handheld

Don't stare at them too long, they hurt your eyes (that's a clue!).

Alamy QC seem to do a very simple thing, they zoom to 100% in the centre of the image (which is the quickest check they can do). So, apart from scanning across the image for dust and odd birds and things, I would do a final check by zooming to 100%, dead centre and if it ain't right, don't submit it.

Here's other common effects that gets the dreaded soft and lacking definition failure:

This picture was taken at high ISO and then noise reduction was applied heavily leaving a painterly effect @ ISO1600 1/60s f4 18mm handheld

This picture has been interpolated up from 6MP RAW NEF to 71.8Mb 8-bit PSD showing "jaggies" on the edges @ 1/1000s f5.3 300mm VR handheld

The other failure which is poorly understood is demonstrated in the following images, "chroma noise is something you get with older digital cameras, low MP cameras and at higher ISO settings:

The lower half shows chroma noise, the upper half has had the noise removed.

This shot shows the chroma noise exagerated by pushing the saturation to 100%.

Alamy have written a guide to removing chroma noise and some other retouching techniques, here

Hope that helps...

Table Mountain from the air

This time last year we made a small error...we booked a summer trip to South Africa, to Cape Town and the Garden Route. Some of the more perceptive amongst you will realise the error, it was winter down there! This year we've done better, we're off to Japan in September.

But, you gotta hand it to them, the weather was fantastic. The highlight for me, certainly photographically, was a tour in a Huey helicopter around Table Mountain

Can someone explain why there is a freeway flyover which stops in mid-air in the centre of Cape Town?!

The other highlights were shooting whales and the inevitable safaris. But for stock guidebook stuff, you have to hand it to this classic "responsible tourism" image of the penguins at Boulders Beach. Watch your toes though, we got pecked through the decking on the way around the boardwalk!

Holland after the tulips

Continuing my running theme of places under a gloomy sky, I finally got round to editing the Holland pictures and got them up online.

There's no doubt that the weekend round the Netherlands was a dissappointment. We arrived under cloud, toured around under a white-out sky, saw no tulips and even the coast was under mist. But then on the final evening and following morning in Amsterdam we got a break and there's some nice pics of us drinking beers...I even had a [schmoke and a] pancake for breakfast.

Keywording this one was fun, we forgot to make a note so Google Maps satellite view to the rescue...

PhotoShelter Buyer Survey 2008

Been reading this today, the PhotoShelter Buyer Survey 2008, in fact it has made its way back home with me to mull over. There are a few inconsistencies that I've noticed in it too, mainly around the availability/quality/diversity graph. So in an effort to get some gems out of it, I've taken the data (as best I can from the graphs they provide) and rehashed it, first a different take on the quality analysis...

This shows a slightly different order to the graph in the survey but matches up pretty well. I have ordered it according to the most "poor" rating + least "strong" rating.

If you add into this analysis the demand for each subject area you end up with a Gartner-style quadrant. This shows that although there is a lack of good quality images of, say, Seniors - there actually isn't a lot of demand for it. The hot tickets are business, diversity and healthcare, the areas to avoid are animals and celebs [for stock], so I'm off to find a group of oriental nurses to take pictures of!

Grey and miserable

Unfortunately, every time I've been somewhere special in the last month the sky has clouded over. First the Lake District, then Loch Lomond, then Edinburgh, and now Holland...and the tulips had all gone too. So what do you do when the weather is shocking, watch the traffic!

I stumbled across a good blog whilst thinking about shooting stock in overcast conditions, here, some excellent photography, especially in gloomy conditions. Here's one of mine...

I think that is probably beyond dull, but you never know it might be useful, whereas my Edinburgh shots were just limited by conditions...

Stock photography again

Well, look at how time flies. One minute I'm sat in M&S thinking about corporate social responsibility, the next I am two contracts later back in mortgages and sat in sunny Watford.

In the meantime, I have finally found an outlet for my photography, and this blog will be tracking my progress. After years of hobby photography, the odd wedding and lots of kit buying, I am now submitting to Alamy and trying to sell my wares. It's been tough to step up to the kind of quality they want but very good for my photography and very motivating...cue one or two images taken in the last busy three weeks, from old stock...
